Reverse bucket-list

The beauty of traveling are the experiences that change your life in a positive effect.  The ugly of traveling is experiencing events that you never expected nor hoped you would witness.   However, I guess that's the exciting of traveling.  I have experienced a lion's share of positive, life-altering experiences and have heard about a slim number of negative, life-altering experiences.

Everyone has pondered the "what if's" of life.  What if I had played the lottery?  What if I hadn't eaten that expired meat?  What if I had been on the bus that had crashed today?  What if I hadn't been a minute late?  These are typical questions that one can contemplate for years and years, but nothing good will ever come from this.  Since being in Europe I have experienced several of these "what if" situations, however, the most thought provoking and troubling came today.

My friends and I decided to go to the beach at Lekeitio today.  Now after-life altering events you always to wonder what if I had arrived later or earlier. We nearly missed our 10:45 bus, we stopped for coffee, and we took a small detour on our way to the main beach.  If we had missed our bus, I wouldn't be able to mark something off my "I hope I never" list.  I don't consider myself overly sheltered or lacking experiences, but I never expected to witness someone die.  I can remember every moment like it just happened.  The figure laying motionless in the water, the panic, the rescue workers, the helicopter, and the white sheet followed by the somber feeling.  I didn't know the victim, but I was there and I felt for them.  I guess you have to accept that not all experiences can be good, but the large majority will hopefully be positive.  Stay tuned...
